Exploring the Top Walking Trails of Morocco

If you're thinking about taking a trip to Morocco, you might want to consider taking part, or all, of it on foot. Under your own steam you get to experience the landscapes, cities, and the culture in a way that is much more profound than if you're simply whizzing past in a bus or a car. Travelling here gives you access to a country unlike any other in the world. Far outside of your normal everyday life, walking in Morocco promises many different and wide-ranging experiences. From the wide and empty warm Sahara sands, to guided walks through the fascinating city of Marrakech, there are many different kinds of walking holidays that you can participate in.

If you're especially adventurous, you can challenge yourself to the arduous - yet rewarding - walk through the beautiful Atlas Mountains. If you want something more urban, you can experience the culture of some of the country's oldest city centres on foot - really feeling, smelling, and seeing the history and the cityscapes.

The Moorish Trail

In the 8th century, Moorish soldiers crossed into the Iberian Peninsula from Africa, and this walk is a historical tour of their journey and influence in both northern Africa and Spain. Walking in Morocco on The Moorish Trail will take you from Marrakech to Rabat (a great imperial city, and the country's capital). From there you can take the ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar and experience the continuing influence of Moorish culture on present day Spanish architecture. You can take the train to Ronda, catching a glimpse of the beautiful arched bridge that spans the Tajo Gorge, and you can finish the tour on foot in Madrid, where the museums and galleries will have displays of the art and artefacts of the region's Moorish history.

South to the Sahara

Walking in Morocco can take you to some spectacular locations with truly stunning and unique scenery. The Saharan dunes offer one of the world's most beautiful backdrops for a holiday on foot. Starting your tour in Marrakech, you'll leave the city with its bustling Djemaa el Fna Square and head out into the expansive High Altas before heading down into the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, where you'll be guided to Tinerhir, an oasis market town. You'll follow gorges and nomadic trails through the valleys and mountains, stopping in villages to experience rural Moroccan life.

Walking in Marrakech

Marrakech is very popular destination for tourists, and when on a holiday walking in Morocco, it is a must-see city for anyone interested in experiencing the culture and urban life. Most of the walking tours that take you into the country will at least pass through there, but check any itinerary to be sure. You wouldn't want to miss this great city!
