L' emplacement géographique du Maroc en fait un pays multiculturel, vu la diversité de sa population arabe, africaine et berbère. Cette mosaïque d'ethnies confère au Maroc une place importante dans le domaine de la culture.

Les Langues parlées au Maroc

Le Maroc est une terre de Berbères, partiellement arabisée il y a 13 siècles, qui a aussi reçu des apports humains et culturels en provenance de l’Espagne, du Portugal et de la France... Le paysage linguistique marocain est le témoin de ces brassages.

La langue officielle du Maroc est l’arabe littéral. Le dialecte arabe du Maroc s'appelle le darija et est et langue maternelle de près des deux tiers de la population marocaine. La darija n'est utilisée à la télévision que depuis peu.
Marginalement, il existe deux autres variantes de l’arabe : le judéo-marocain (quelques milliers de locuteurs au Maroc, plus 200 000 en Israël, quelques dizaines de milliers en France) et l’hassania (hassaniyya), parlée par quelques dizaines de milliers de personnes dans l’extrême Sud (région de Tan Tan) ainsi qu’au Sahara occidental (ce dialecte est surtout parlé en Mauritanie).

Environ 40 % des marocains ont eu pour langue maternelle le berbère ou amazighe mais cette langue n'a pratiquement pas d'existence officielle bien que sa culture existe. Au Maroc, le berbère compte trois dialectes:

- le rifain, ou zenatiya, ou tarifit, parlé dans le Rif.(Nord)

- le tamazight ( ou braber) parlé dans le Moyen Atlas, une partie du Haut Atlas et plusieurs vallées. Il dispose d’un alphabet (le tifinagh) également utilisé par les Touaregs.(Centre)

- le tachelhit pratiqué par les Chleuhs du Haut Atlas, du Sous et du littoral du sud du Maroc.(Sud)

De façon plus marginale, ces trois dialectes berbères sont parlés en Algérie et en France. On publie peu en langue berbère, quelques journaux quelques livres. Beaucoup de ceux qui le parlent ne le lisent pas (faute d’un apprentissage scolaire qui n’existe pas au Maroc). Le sujet du statut de cette langue reste tabou. Au cours des années 1990, plusieurs enseignants ont été emprisonnés pour avoir demandé l’adoption du berbère comme langue officielle au côté de l’arabe.

La langue française reste la langue non-officielle du pays, mais son importante reste grande. Près de 30 % la parlent couramment, et elle demeure toujours enseignée dans les écoles primaires, collèges et lycées dans toutes les universités, et dans les écoles supérieures.

Dans le nord et le sud du pays du fait de la présence espagnole, en grande majorité domine l’espagnol, soit à peu près 4 millions d'hispanophones.

Le nombre d'anglophones au Maroc est encore faible aujourd’hui, mais l’apprentissage de l’anglais se propage de plus en plus au Maroc. On estime à 3 % le taux de marocains anglophones.

D’autant plus que l’anglais est présent dans le système éducatif marocain en plus de l’italien et de l’allemand.

Avec ses 446 550 km², sans le Sahara occidental dont il revendique le territoire, le Maroc est le plus grand pays de la région après l'Algérie. Pour l'instant, le Sahara occidental n'a pas encore trouvé de statut définitif au plan juridique, soit plus de trente ans après le départ des Espagnols en 1976. Selon l'ONU, le Sahara occidental figure sur la liste des «territoires non autonomes». Le territoire est revendiqué à la fois par le Maroc, qui le désigne maintenant comme le Sahara marocain, et par la République arabe sahraouie démocratique (RASD), fondée par le Front Polisario en 1976. Dans les faits, le Maroc contrôle et administre aujourd'hui environ 80 % du territoire, alors que le Front Polisario, pour sa part, n'en contrôle que 20 %. Le Maroc revendique également les enclaves espagnoles de Ceuta (18,5 km²) et de Melilla (20 km²) situées au nord des côtes méditerranéennes.
